Khap Panchayats have advocated changes in Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 to make illegal same gotra
and same village marriage. According to them such measures could solve the
problems of rising crime against women such as female foeticide and honor
killing.
At present section 5 of Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 prohibits marriage between parties who are sapinda [see meaning of spinda relationship] to each other and who are within the degree of prohibited relationship. However
there is no such prohibition on same gotra marriage.
